ABOUT KUMBH MELA

Kumbh Mela  holds a lot of importance for the Hindus and is deemed to be the largest religious gathering in the world. Kumbh festival invites millions of tourist, pilgrims and foreign national to be the part of this glory of history that Hinduism has to offer. It is a carnival of the several ascetics and sages in saffron attires.

Mahakumbh was meant for the great minds to meet and share knowledge for the welfare of the living beings. Decisions and new findings in philosophy and science taken during the Kumbh Mela were then carried by the Saints to different parts of the world.

Mythology

In The Bhagavata Purana   it is told that once there was a war between there was a battle between the demigods and the demons.
Lord Indra  had offended sage Durvasa  and so the Devas had lost all their power.
The demigods ran to Lord Vishnu, who made an arrangement with the Asuras to Churn the ocean of milk, the  'Ksheer Sagar' to obtain  Amrita, the nectar of immortality.

During the Samudra Manthan  or churning of the ocean, several celestial gifts were obtained. Finally, Dhanvantri  appeared with the "Amrit kumbh", the jug of nectar.

As told in the VishnuBrahmanandaPadma and Agni Puranas, as soon as the nectar appeared, Lord Vishnu handed the jug to Garuda , who was to take it to the safety of heaven.

However, in his attempt, which lasted 12 demigod days or 12 human years, he was stopped by the demons at and was forced to place the kumbha of nectar down at Paryag,  Ujjain,  Nashik , and Haridwar . Some of the nectar spilled at each of these places, sanctifying them forever.
That is why Kumbh is held every 12 years at these four places.

When Kumbh Mela is Celebrated

Kumbh Mela is celebrated during the special planetary situation when sun enters in the zodiac sign aries and jupiter enters in the zodiac sign aquarious. Kumbh Mela is celebrated at the four places in India. In each place it is celebrated once in 12 years. This four holy places are - Haridwar, Allahabad, Nashik and Ujjain. At these four places it is believedd that drop of nector fell down. However the exact location and time depands on astrological & religious considerations. In 2015 Kumbh Mela is at Nashik. In 2016 Kumbh Mela will be celebrated at Ujjain. During the Kumbh Mela at Ujjain there will be also Ardh Kumbh (Half Kumbh) at Haridwar.

Kumbh Mela Celebrations At Haridwar

Though all the Kumbh Melas enjoy almost similar quantity of devotees but the name of Haridwar comes at the top of all Indian pilgrimages. Hence the Kumbh Mela of Haridwar enjoys exceptional media coverage and Tourist traffic. The place is termed as the gateway to heaven in Hindu mythological scriptures. The Myth behind the celebration of Kumbh Mela goes like this, after the Deva-Asura war, which went on for quite some time, both the involved parties came to a conclusion that they instead of fighting should come together and churn the milky ocean to obtain the Elixir. The sea was churned and elixir was obtained but it was not meant for the Asura or the demons hence the god who appeared from the sea with the Kumbh or the pitcher of elixir ran from the chasing Asuras. In this chase a few drops fell on earth and now at these four places the Kumbh Mela is conducted.
